KELAVEL, K. C. (AP) —A U. S. federal judge ordered the Canadian government to provide free Viagra pills to men who suffer from erectile dysfunction, a new study says.
The federal court decision, made by U. District Judge James C. Kirk, is a landmark judgment. It will allow the government to provide free Viagra pills to men who suffer from erectile dysfunction, and also allow the government to provide the drugs to treat other sexual problems.
"It is a victory for the millions of men in Canada who are suffering from this disease," Kirk said.
Viagra, which is sold under the brand name Levitra, helps men get an erection by increasing blood flow to the penis.
The drugs are not available on the U. market, however, and in some cases, they can be purchased at pharmacies or online, Kirk said.
Viagra was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1998, but the drug was not effective until 2003, and the drug's makers, Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline, filed for patent for the drug, but the U. patent expired in June 2018, and Viagra remains available in the U. pharmacies.
The drug is only available with a prescription. "There is an ongoing battle over whether to allow the government to provide Viagra to men who are suffering from erectile dysfunction," Kirk said.
The drug can be sold at the pharmacy or online for about $100, she said. "We will provide the drugs to all men who are suffering from erectile dysfunction, and the government will provide them," Kirk said.
Kirk's ruling will likely be appealed by the government of British Columbia.

Kirk is not the first to challenge the decision. In August, the U. Food and Drug Administration granted an "inferiority" ruling that would allow the government to provide Viagra to men who suffer from erectile dysfunction, and the U. Federal Trade Commission ordered Canadian pharmaceutical firm Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline to pay $8.9 million in damages to a woman who had suffered sexual loss when the drug was not available.
Kirk said that the case was "not an easy or easy ride, and it's a very emotional case," Kirk said.
"This case is very similar to the one we were about to hear from the consumer and consumer-focused groups," Kirk said.

A new study has found that Viagra-associated erectile dysfunction is not a side effect of the drug.
This is the first study to show that Viagra causes sexual dysfunction and is not a side effect of the drug.
The drug sildenafil, which is also known as tadalafil, was originally developed to treat high blood pressure and erectile dysfunction. It works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis and allowing blood to flow into the penis when the person is sexually excited.
The drug also works on the nerves and muscles in the penis, which helps men to have an erection.
